University of Missouri Racism

So, I keep hearing about all this on the radio. I found this timeline of "events":

http://www.motherjones.com/politics...esident-resigns-racism-football-hunger-strike

So, there are two specific incidents of racism at the school. I'm not quite sure, from the article, whether these were actual students who were doing this.

What exactly is a University president, especially one thats only been on the job for a few years, supposed to do? The article talks about that this has been going on for a long time, without siting specific examples previous to those mentioned. The racism, if from white students, is owned by those students. If there is proof then they should be kicked off campus.

Maybe someone can enlighten me? I mean the President of UAB was protested for months after dissolving the UAB football team siting financial issues when it wasn't the case at all, and he's still there.

Yeah, it seems like a bit of an over reaction with the scant details the articles on the web are reporting. I'm guessing the white kids shouting the racist words were identified and the school made no effort to punish them. Or maybe the school made no effort to even identify them. That bit of information would go a long way in getting this movement to make sense.

As far as the protest incident, if I'm swarmed by a group of protesters, the LAST thing I'm going to do is get out of the car or try to have a discussion with them! That's just stupid and will not work. At best it will just be a mob of angry people screaming demands and accusations, one sided, and will not lead to civil discourse or a resolution. At worst you'll wind up dead.

BUT... in this instance he could have contacted the Concerned Student 1950 leaders after the incident and offered to meet in his office and discuss their concerns. That action would likely have prevented the current escalation, assuming he made a sincere effort to address/resolve their issues.

It's not over reaction, it's money. When the football team said they wouldn't play, I bet they maid him quit.
The president of the school is like the CEO of a company. When things go wrong it's on him. If someone comes to him with a big enough problem (like the girl that ended up killing her self because nothing was done.)THey are supposed to do something.

I hadn't heard about a girl killing herself. The reports I've seen leave out a lot of info about what events have brought about the tension to this point.

Yeah, they interviewed the guy doing the hunger strike and he spoke about.
I'll have to see if I can find a few stories:

She asked for help and they drug their feet. Sure you don't hand the guy right away but you do look into it.

I see. Very sad, but football players get away with damn near anything at any level. It's disgusting to me, to give people a free pass because they play one particular game. I honestly don't get the cult following football has. Sure, it's an entertaining game, but that's all it is. I see nothing in football that deserves players being given this untouchable God status. America is fucked in the head when it comes to this game.

I agree, the free pass though come from the cash. each country has its sport everywhere else football (soccer)
To me it really isn't about football, I can't see acting like an ass at a game, or fighting over a team. I have played football and watched it,
as well playing other sports . ......

Like you said, just don't get it. There were some comments in one of the stories and the question was asked do you think they will face Penn States fate if they knew about it.

The thing that really surprises me, is at the Pro level there are a lot of stand up guys that do great things for their communities... it's a shame they (and the team owners) don't stand up and say "This is a privilege to play here. Show respect, be an outstanding individual OFF the field or we won't allow you ON the field."

It absolutely disgusts me every time the players union fights to keep one of those lowlife woman beaters on the field. They, along with other players, coaches, team owners, the NFL, the universities and high schools have an opportunity (should be a given; responsibility) to hold those who participate to a higher standard, no exceptions regardless of skill on the field. One strike and you're out with some things. I would say most programs do, but it should be ALL. And those that don't should be under intense scrutiny and be pressured (forced?) to comply or have all association/opportunity to play be revoked.

This kind of turned into a rant against the football system, but added into the other things I've read, I now see the catalyst and better understand why events have unfolded as they have. Thanks for helping me see it livespive.

No problem....

IF you ever get a chance check out the movie The Program. Also Remeber the Titans is a good one to show the good that can come from the bad. IT would remind you of the football team standing up for the student. By the end that is :)

I once knew a girl, I'll call her Kathy, who was raped by 11 football players. Needless to say, her life was ruined. The players? Nothing happened to them. I don't think she ever reported it, she was so ashamed and embarrassed. She left town the morning after and things went downhill for her after that. I kept contact with her for a couple of years then she just sort of vanished in San Francisco.
