Ridiculous! Belichick fails to get into Pro Football Hall of Fame

There are moments in sports when debate is not only unnecessary, but actively absurd. Bill Belichick not being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility is one of those moments. It is not a controversy born of close judgment or evolving standards. It is a failure of perspective, and for a league that markets its own history as sacred, it borders on football blasphemy.

Belichick snub: 25 Hall voters who confirmed they voted for him, and 2 who voted 'no'

It has been more than 48 hours since word first broke that Bill Belichick, the NFL's all-time leader in Super Bowl titles and playoff wins among head coaches, will not be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. That has proven to be a bit controversial.

Reactions to the news have skewed heavily toward outrage, from some of the biggest names of the football world and beyond. Making the situation even more contentious is an opaque and complicated voting process that might have incentivized some voters to leave Belichick off their ballot.

The decision to reject Belichick in his first year of eligibility for the Pro Football Hall of Fame came down to the selection committee, a room of 50 people, all media members from diverse backgrounds with representatives from all 32-team media contingents. Some members have been respected reporters for decades. Some were Hall of Fame players and coaches themselves.

Many sports Halls of Fame are a joke -- and that's at all levels. Regarding my local bowling Hall of Fame, it might as well be called the Hall of Shame.

Many of the area's top players have been refused entry, included myself, for one reason or another, and the ONLY reason they keep me out is because I exposed massive -- and I do mean massive -- rules-breaking and misuse of funds by board members of arguably the worst-run local asociation in the history of ABC/USBC. And as a result of proving my contentions, the local association president, a vice-president and back-to-back association ssecretaries were suspended for life.

My qualifications are unquestioned. I wrote a local newspaper bowling column for 35 years, and on the lanes, at one point, I carried a higher yearbook average than anyone ever elected to the Hall for four consecutive seasons. I never opted to turn pro, but for a time, I was the ONLY player in the 7,000-man association to have the necessary average qualifications to be PBA-eligible. As for service, I was nominated for league office 64 times and was elected all 64 times, and I can honestly say that I never broke any ABC/USBC rules at any time.

There are a number of other well-qualified people who have been kept out of the local Hall, and another pefect example is Lisa Wagner, a local girl who wound up with 32 career women's professional titles and had a stellar local league and tournament career as well. She is in the USBC Hall of Fame, the Florida state Hall of Fame, the professional ladies Hall of Fame and the Florida Sports Hall of Fame, but she has never been inducted to the sorry local Hall of Fame.
