Greg Steube, the conservative House Republican who represents my congressional district, voted "No" on the final vote on the CR legislation, and in today's weekly newsletter to constituents, he explained why. Here's what he said:
This week, the government shutdown finally came to an end. Unfortunately, in an embarrassing display of corruption, eight senators attached a provision to the CR granting certain members of the Senate with a legal avenue to enrich themselves by suing the Justice Department using taxpayer dollars. It is indefensible for lawmakers to create an exclusive tool for themselves to rake in hundreds of thousands of dollars at the expense of the public. There is no good reason why my colleagues and I in the House were denied the opportunity to remove this provision before proceeding to a final vote.
