The issue here was the wording on his part was poor. If he would have said that maga was trying to prove the shooter was left wing, that would be fine (even if there was nothing to prove, it has already been proven by the FBI).

The implication by the poor wording by Kimmel here is that he used a negative "anything other" and the phrase "one of them" which one easily hears this as him implying the opposite of what true in the situation: that the shooter was Maga.

I get comedians will make dark jokes. I remember some doing jokes around 9/11. The problem with this is he has a national audience and he's making a political statement around the event, not a real joke here.
 
Just for clarity, what I'm talking about is the difference between a statement such as "he was not one of them" vs "he was anything other than them".

A different example:

"He was not polite"
"He was anything other than polite".

Most read this as the person was rude.

But if someone makes the latter statement, they can say that he was something else without defining it. The first sentence makes only an assertion without any other supposition.

The language that Kimmel chose was weasely.

1. Maga didn't have to characterize the kid, it was done by the FBI. They were defending the FBI/DoJ evidence. So saying maga was trying to characterize the kid is false: it was already a matter of fact.

2. By using the "as anything other than them" in conjunction with the phrase political points implies that the speaker, Jimmy Kimmel , disagrees with the upfront assertion that the shooter is something "other than" maga.

What do y'all think of the FCC here? Even Obama chimed in stating that was dangerous.

Of course, he said nothing when many other media types were cancelled due to pressure from the Biden administration on Twitter and Facebook.
