Excellent article on Solar power

GOOD ARTICLE DJ. HOME INSTALLS HAVE FALLEN WAY OFF SINCE THE FIRST APPEARANCE OF SOLAR FOR HOMES.

Had the powers-that-were not been scammed by the crook Edison, they'd have listened to Nikola Tesla and we'd all be enjoying free wireless energy right now being generated by the magnetic fields of the planet.

We should be investing more in solar here in the south. In the summer solar can run the ACs during the day with fossil fuels/hydro/nuclear running at night.

When it's colder, fossil fuels running heat pumps at night and solar during the day.

Up north solar won't work nearly as well.

WHAT WAS THE LONGEVITY TESTING ON MAGNETIC FIELDS OF THE EARTH?

THE PROBLEM IN THE SOUTH IS STORM DAMAGE AND LOOKS. NOONE WANTS THAT CRAP ON THEIR ROOF. I AM NOT SURE OF NOW, BUT AT ONE TIME INSURANCE COMPANIES WERE NOT PAYING FOR REPAIRS. AND REPAIRS COST MORE THAN THE PRODUCT. BUT I KNOW IT HAS BEEN SIMPLIFIED, BUT STILL LOOKS LIKE CRAP. AND I HAVE NEVER TRIED TO ROOF AROUND SOLAR PANELS EITHER.

The article is talking about utilities and solar, not residential solar.

SORRY DJ. BUT TAUL BROUGHT UP THAT "RESIDENTIAL ROOFTOP" WASNT COST EFFECTIVE IN THE ARTICLE. I JUST KIND OF EXPANDED ON IT. RESIDENTIAL ROOFTOP WOULD BE MORE COST EFFECTIVE IF MORE PEOPLE DID IT, THEY WONT.

It's all bullshit until we have zero emission batteries, or super caps that will store massively while maintaining a micro footprint. WTF wants a massive, corrosive, and dangerous battery pack in their house? Plus, creating and recycling batteries is much more enviro-UNfriendly than burning natural gas or oil. Our ignorant city installed a massive solar bank and closed down out small local power plant because they said it was too costly to maintain. During the meeting I voiced my concerns that the solar bank would take up valuable space that could be used for something useful, and that the bank will cost more to operate and maintain than the coal fired plant we had. I was laughed at in the meeting. Seriously, laughed at. Well, that was 12 years ago, and since then they've figured out it's costing 23% more to operate and maintain the solar bank, plus, the output is .001% of the local plant. So, we're buying out power from White Pine which is 150 miles down the road and are now having to pay whatever they want to charge us. Of course they did!!!!! Our power bills went up 40%. But my concerns were laughable. It hasn't hit them yet that these cells will not last long enough to pay for themselves before replacement is needed. They'll soon find out. Unfortunately, I'll be one of those paying for them.

Wow, everyone going off on a tangent from the article.

The idea here is that during the day, it only costs 3 cents a KWH to get electricity from Solar. No batteries required. This is at the utility side. This is already being done in places like Texas. Could we imagine large solar farms in Alabama, Louisina, South Carolina, Georgia?

For example, we have nuclear and hydro in North Alabama. Central and South Alabama is Hydro, coal, and natural gas (mostly coal). Fossil fuel consumption could be cut by as much as half if we used Solar during the day, and fossil fuels at night.

The article is discussing a "mixed" source of energy.

Greg,

Solar has come a LONG way in 12 years. Also, Solar makes no sense in Northern states as solar radiation is reduced when consumption is the most needed (winter).

Tiny solar supplements make sense in certain parts of the country/world. The problem comes from the enviro-whackos who think we can run the entire globe on the sun. The Biden admin has stated from day one that fossil fuels will be phased out entirely and we will be on solar and wind. In this day and age, as well as the near future, this is absolutely not possible. Even if we were to surrender all of our cattle and farm lands to solar and generators, it couldn't come close to supplying a fraction of what we need. I understand fully what you're saying, and we have a few places around here with supplemental solar on the roof tops. Seems to help..... until it snows. I'm just just taking it a bit further and countering the fools who truly think we'll be a fossil fuel free country in 4 years.

YES DJ, SOLAR HAS COME A LONG WAY AND WILL GO EVEN FARTHER IN THE FUTURE. I DONT THINK ITS OUT OF THE QUESTION, MAYBE EVEN IN MY LIFETIME, SOLAR PANELS MAY BE THE SIZE OF A SHOE BOX. AND WILL BE CAPABLE OF RUNNING AN ENTIRE 2 STORY HOUSE. OR EVEN IF IT TAKES 3 OR 4 SHOE BOXES. ITS COMING.

MAY BE OFF TOPIC, BUT SAME THEORY. LOOK AT LED LIGHTING. EVERYBODY BITCHED ABOUT COST AND LACK OF COLOR SPECTRUM. LOOK AT IT NOW. TECHNOLOGY HAS MOVED IT SO FAR SO FAST AND ITS INEXPENSIVE. TECHNOLOGY WILL CONTINUE TO GROW, OR SHRINK, SOLAR PANELS TO MAKE THEM COST EFFECTIVE AND "PRETTY".

We know that's a joke. It'll be 20 years or more before we get close to eliminating fossil fuels.

I don't get why we aren't doing nuclear. We have so more tech and safety measures but everyone is so worried about nuclear.

If you listen to the enviro wackos millions will die if we don't do something. Isn't nuclear worth the risk?

One thing we've all learned is that the left knows nothing about risks and cost analysis when it comes to human lives.

Nuke is much too dirty. Toxic waste is huge concern. No place to safely store it for 1000 years. I say we go hybrid such as hydro/hydrogen, or solar/hydrogen. Use hydro generators and/or solar cells to power the electrolysis and hydrogen would be the main fuel. Result, NO toxic emissions. What's left is oxygen and water vapor.
