Former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson now appears poised to become the Democratic Party’s standard-bearer against Republican Sen. Susan Collins this November, stepping into the vacuum left by disgraced former nominee Graham Platner.

According to RedState, Jackson surged ahead after a weekend of county caucuses, where party activists scrambled to find a replacement for Platner, whose campaign imploded under the weight of nearly a year’s worth of increasingly serious allegations, ranging from Nazi tattoos to sexual assault. Platner’s withdrawal ten days ago triggered a frenzied, and at times bizarre, scramble among Democrats, with Jackson and several others rushing to declare their interest in the race.
